Hennesseys International Paddleboard Championship Chooses Hawaii
for 2003 Event
(North Shore, Oahu) Hennessey's Tavern has announced it will host the 2nd Annual
Hennessey's International Paddleboard Championship on Saturday July 19th,
2003 on the North Shore of Oahu. Attracting the world's best ocean athletes,
this open-ocean near-shore event will consist of a spectacular 8.5 mile open-ocean
paddleboard race from Turtle Bay to the world-famous Waimea Bay. Race participants
will follow the scenic coastline of the North Shore, passing renowned Hawaii
surf spots such as Sunset Beach, Pipeline and Waimea Bay. There will be a check
point and turn buoy just off Sunset Beach for spectators to cheer on the athletes
and to get close to the race action.
The Hennessey's International Paddleboard Championship is the largest paddleboard
race of the season with a prize purse of $11,000! This challenging course
serves as a fantastic warm up for the prestigious 32-mile Quiksilver Edition
Molokai to Oahu World Championship paddleboard race held the following week July
27th, 2003. With
these two events so close together, race organizers expect over 200
competitors from around the world to participate in the Hennesseys International
Paddleboard Championship, along with an unusually large turn out of spectators,
and international coverage from around the world. The inaugural race received
international media recognition last year in Noosa Heads, Queensland, Australia).
This event is also a fundraiser, with designated proceeds going to the Junior
Lifeguard Program on Oahu. According to event coordinator Dolan Eversole, This
event is a winning situation for race participants, the Junior Lifeguard Program
of Oahu to teach and train young athletes about ocean safety and rescue, and
the spectators!
