Safety precautions

While not mandatory, it is highly recommended to take the following precautions.

1. The start can be very confusing, you need to get your stuff off the beach and into your escort boat before 6:45 on race morning. The race starts between 2 buoys about a 100 yards from shore. Your escort boats must wait off to the side or rear for 15 minutes before they can come to you. It is a good idea for you to wear some type of unique headgear so that your boat can spot you easily.

2. Make sure at least one person in your escort boat is CPR certified and has basic first aid knowledge and equipment.

3. Make sure the tether to your paddleboard has a quick release feature. The Oceanic World Surftek system is highly recommended. Wear brightly colored shorts and a hat. Carry or wear a personal flotation device.

4. Carry a Coast Guard approved personal location device on your person.

5. Have all persons on your escort boat wear personal flotation devices. Inspect your escort boat, make sure it is safe.

6. Carry shark repellant and other anti shark devices. on your person or your escort boat.

7. Make sure your boat has a bullhorn or megaphone so your boat can communicate with you.

8. Make sure your boat has binoculars, flares, and other emergency equipment.

9. Carry adequate water, food, and beverages needed to complete at least an 8 hour race. Have someone on your boat swim out to you with your water or food. Always make sure the boat is in neutral when anyone approaches it.

10. Make sure your board is brightly colored on both the top and bottom.

11. Make sure to inspect the racecourse. The finish around Kaukonahoa (Portlock) point can be very tricky and dangerous, especially if the surf is over 3 feet. Familiarize yourself with the route to the finish line.

12. There will be a Wednesday evening 7/28/04 pre-race meeting at Dukes Canoe Club in Waikiki at 7:30. Race packets will be passed out there. Contact Mike Takahashi, 638 8208, if you cannot make it.

13. Meet with your escort boat captain at least 3 days before the race (the Wednesday pre-race meeting is a good time). Discuss all safety procedures, race route, and how to hook up after the race starts. Make sure the race # sticker is on the port side of the boat in a clearly visible area. Make sure your boat shows up early enough to get your stuff on board.

14. If you withdraw from the race you must radio the Head Official Boat on vhf 71 or 72 or CB 4 or 5 and let them know that you are withdrawing from the race. If your escort boat’s radio is broken, then physically check in with the Head Official Boat, which will be stationed at Portlock Point after the first finisher comes in.

Travel and accommodation

1. Only 747’s can handle boards over 12 feet. Aloha Island Air and Hawaiian Airlines fly to Molokai, you can purchase e-tickets from them online. Hawaiian Air has 2 flights a day and can carry 12 foot boards. Aloha has 6 flights, but can’t carry boards. Bring a pre-race breakfast, there are no restaurants near the Kalua Koi resort complex.

2. If you want to stay on the North Shore before the race (highly recommended), contact Mike Takahashi (808 638 8208 e-mail mike.takahashi@conagrafoods.com) When on Oahu please contact Mike Takahashi to help you with training paddles and answer questions.

3. The Kalua Koi Hotel will be closed. The race will be headquartered at the Kalua Koi Villas, 808 552 2721 or 800 367 5004. The best rates are available on the internet at www.castleresorts.com. If they are full try the Kenani Kai (808 552 2761). You can also camp at Papohaku State Park, which is about a mile south of the Kalua Koi area.

4. Shuttle service from the airport to the Villas and Papohaku is available at $10/person (they are not equipped to get your board to the hotel). Call 808-553-3369 to make arrangements (e-mail mort@aloha.net).
