Honolulu
- (March 31, 2005) - What first began as Hawaii’s
premiere vintage surf auction in 2001, will return on
Saturday, July 23rd, 2005, as one of the world’s
leading auctions of surf memorabilia, Hawaiiana and surf
collectibles. Held in 2001 and again in 2003, the Quiksilveredition
Hawaiian Islands Vintage Surf Auction has seen close
to a half-million dollars worth of vintage surf items
change hands, with over $20,000 donated to the Hawaiian
Lifeguard Association’s Junior Guard Program.
More than 40 years of travel, competing and promoting
within the surf industry have afforded Hawaii surf
promoter Randy
Rarick the best contacts in the business. Subsequently,
he has access to some of the finest collectibles from
around the world and can now lay claim to the fact
that his Hawaiian
Islands Vintage Surf Auction is regarded as the world
center for uncovering and auctioning coveted vintage
surf items.
"
Surf memorabilia and Hawaiiana have become hot items for
collectors around the world," says Rarick. "With
the growth of interest in surfing, surf items with a Hawaiian
theme have become particularly fashionable world wide.
The collection of Hawaiiana pieces of historical value
is one of the most in-demand sectors of the collector market."
The auction will offer surf memorabilia, Hawaiiana
and surf collectibles and will feature a variety
of classic
pieces such as vintage wood boards from the 1930s, "lost" surf
art from the '40s, balsa boards from the '50s, "Golden
Age" collectables of the '60s, Gerry Lopez's personal
board from the mid-'70s, and one of the first Simon Anderson "Thrusters" of
the early '80s among other items. The Quiksilveredition
Hawaiian Islands Vintage Surf Auction will also include
one-of-a-kind island surf art and popular Hawaiiana pieces.
Over the course of the first two Hawaiian Islands Vintage
Surf Auctions, the highest ticket items have been
a 1930's Pacific System Homes 11 foot, redwood,
balsa
board that
fetched $18,200 in 2001, Duke Kahanamoku's last surfboard
that sold for $15,000 in 2001, as well as a balsa
board shaped by Woody Brown that brought in $11,800
in 2003.
This year the auction will again be held in conjunction
with the Hawaii All-Collectors Show, one of Hawaii's
most popular collector shows with over 200 vendors,
and will
benefit the Hawaiian Lifeguard Association " Junior
Guard Program".
Starting April 1st, previews of pieces to be auctioned
can be viewed at www.hawaiiansurfauction.com <http://www.hawaiiansurfauction.com> ,
with new pieces to be added on a weekly basis.
In addition to an excellent collection of items,
some of surfing's biggest legends will also be
in attendance
at
the auction, offering up and personalizing some
of their own most valuable pieces. Big wave legends
such as Fred
Hemmings, Mike Doyle and Greg Noll will be present
along with world class shapers such as Joe Quigg,
Dick Brewer
and Ben Aipa. Stars of the '70's shortboard revolution,
the likes of Gerry Lopez, Rory Russell and Barry
Kanaiaupuni, will give insight into their submissions.
Also,
select surf artists such as John Severson, Jon Damm
and Kevin Short have been commissioned to provide
special
pieces
for this year's auction.
